What is “International Studies in Engineering (ISE) UDE” Program?

Welcome to the International Studies in Engineering (ISE) Bachelor’s degree programs, a premier undergraduate academic pipeline offered by the Faculty of Engineering (FIW) at our partner: University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).The ISE curriculum is meticulously structured to meet the modern demands of the international higher education and global labor market, training graduates to work in an independent, self-responsible, and interdisciplinary manner. 

Core Program Characteristics

  • Structured Bilingual Progression: To facilitate seamless academic integration, the first year of the Bachelor’s program is conducted 100% in English. Over the course of the 3-year program, lectures shift dynamically to deliver a final global balance of 50% English and 50% German.
  • Tuition-Free Higher Education: As a public German university, UDE charges zero tuition fees. Students only pay a standard semester social contribution fee (approx. €350), which includes a regional public transportation ticket.
  • Common Foundational Year: All engineering tracks share an identical basic structure in the 1st year, covering core principles in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and engineering fundamentals before students divide into separate specialized disciplines.
  • Comprehensive Training: The 3-year (6-semester) curriculum concludes with an independent Bachelor Thesis and includes a mandatory practical industrial internship to supplement academic knowledge.

Official ISE UDE Admission Requirements

Direct access to the Bachelor programs requires fulfillment of the following mandatory criteria:  

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Requirements at Enrolment: When initially enrolling, all international applicants must prove language proficiency in both German and English at a completed Level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Mandatory placement testing is conducted on-campus right at the start of your first semester.
  • Requirements During Studies: Applicants whose high school qualification was not obtained at a German-speaking institution must demonstrate Level B2 German proficiency by the time they register for any modules delivered in German.
  • Prerequisite for Graduation: Successfully graduating and receiving an ISE Bachelor's degree requires certified proof of Level B2 proficiency in both German and English. (Targeted language refinement support courses are built directly into the university curriculum).

Requirements for the Bachelor Program

  • General university entrance qualification ("Abitur") or
  • Special university entrance qualification (restricted to certain fields of study, so called "Fachhochschulreife" or equivalent).
  • The evidence of a special degree course related educational background or qualification from school with special profile in mathematics.
  • Applicants must prove that they have studied mathematics in the last 3 years of the previous education entitling them to direct university access and have graduated with a grade of 2.5 (German grading system) or better.

Initial Application Portal

All non-EU applicants must first submit their secondary credentials, certificates, and language transcripts digitally through the uni-assist application portal.

Program Intake

Standard enrollment into the core engineering Bachelor tracks opens annually for the Winter Semester (commencing in October).

Computer Engineering (ISE-Bachelor)

I am an ISE student, currently studying computer engineering at UDE. I have been here for over a year and I would say that studying in Germany has a lot of its perks. For one, I am free to attend any classes I would like to, that I am interested in, even though I do not need to. It is also not compulsory to attend classes, if you are hardworking enough to do studying on your own.

It is completely up to oneself what you want to do, and what you choose to do. It not only benefits us in the form of education, but also teaches us how to educate ourselves in life. For me, the university system had definitely made me lazier somedays, but it has also taught me to be independent and disciplined. However, one must be prepared to learn the German language if you really are considering studying here in Germany.
